Man gets down on his knee during a proposal in Silver Springs

A Silver Springs Botanical Garden Proposal in Calgary was the perfect choice for Selena and Joshua

Surrounded by greenery, flowers, and quiet pathways, they became engaged in a place that felt intimate, meaningful, and completely suited to Selena’s love of plants and vintage beauty.

The photographs tell the story of the moment itself, but so much care went into creating it long before Joshua got down on one knee.

Planning Selena and Joshua’s Calgary Proposal

When Joshua first contacted me, he was both incredibly excited and understandably nervous. He wanted the proposal to feel thoughtful and personal, and he cared deeply about making sure Selena would love every part of it.

We had several phone calls as we worked through the details together. We talked about the location, where I would stand, how we would keep everything a surprise, and exactly what would happen when they arrived.

Joshua even researched which knee he was supposed to kneel on. That detail still makes me smile because it shows just how much thought he put into getting the moment right.

There were also a few close calls leading up to the proposal. Joshua had to think quickly when people nearly said things that might give away the surprise.

Then came the doughnut. So many proposals have that moment….

Joshua was far too nervous to eat his breakfast doughnut, which was apparently unusual enough that Selena immediately knew something was up. She may have arrived with a little bit of a clue, but knowing that something might happen did not make the moment any less beautiful.

When she turned around and saw Joshua down on one knee, there was all the emotion that comes with realizing someone you love has put so much care into creating this moment for you.

Why Choose Silver Springs Botanical Garden for a Proposal?

The Botanical Gardens of Silver Springs are one of Calgary’s loveliest hidden gems. The gardens include winding pathways, established trees, colourful flowers, and many small areas that feel tucked away from the rest of the city.

For someone like Selena, who loves plants and vintage details, the setting felt especially fitting. It was beautiful without feeling overly formal, and it gave Joshua the chance to create a private moment surrounded by nature.

Privacy is an important consideration when choosing a Calgary proposal location. Some couples love the energy of a busy public space, while others want somewhere quieter where they can be fully present with each other. The gardens offered a wonderful balance. They provided a beautiful backdrop while still allowing the proposal to feel personal and intimate.

I couldn’t help but tear up when I got the results.

Shannon went above and beyond to capture the perfect moment for my proposal. She communicated well through the whole process and showed off some great acting skills to not give away the surprise to my now fiancé.  All the pictures were so beautiful. Thank you so much Shannon for capturing one of the best days of our lives!! I cannot recommend you enough!

The Silver Springs Botanical Garden Proposal

When Selena and Joshua arrived, everything needed to look like a normal photography session. My role was not only to photograph the proposal, but also to help protect the surprise until the exact right moment.

(My niece actually gave me acting lessons beforehand and had very little faith in my ability to pull it off. Thankfully, Joshua later praised my convincing performance in his review, and I immediately sent her the proof.😂)

I used a simple cover story and told Selena that I was setting up the next photograph. While she was focused on me and waiting for direction, Joshua quietly moved into place behind her and got down on one knee.

Then she turned around.

There was the wonderful realization that all the unusual little moments leading up to that day suddenly made sense. Joshua’s nervousness disappeared into pure happiness, and Selena had the heartfelt reaction he had been hoping for.

These are the proposal photographs I love most. The setting was beautiful, but the expressions between them were what made the images come alive.

Proposal Photographs That Preserve the Whole Story

Proposal photography is about more than capturing the second someone says yes. It is about preserving the anticipation beforehand, the realization on someone’s face, the nervous laughter, the tears, and the first few minutes of knowing that your lives have changed.

Because the plan had been carefully discussed in advance, Joshua did not need to worry about where to stand or whether the moment would be photographed clearly. He could focus entirely on Selena.

That preparation is one of the most valuable parts of working with a proposal photographer. I can help you think through lighting, privacy, timing, positioning, weather, and a believable reason for being in front of the camera. The proposal still feels spontaneous and deeply personal, but you are not trying to manage every practical detail alone.

A Meaningful Connection to Joshua’s Family

Photographing this proposal was particularly meaningful to me because I had previously photographed Joshua’s mother’s Calgary wedding. Her day was full of heart and light, and I recognized those same qualities in Joshua as we planned this moment together.

It felt incredibly special to document another important chapter in their family’s story. Being invited back into someone’s life for moments like this is something I never take for granted.

Frequently Asked Questions About Calgary Proposals

Is Silver Springs Botanical Garden a good proposal location?

Yes. Silver Springs Botanical Garden is a beautiful proposal location for couples who want greenery, flowers, and a setting that feels peaceful without leaving Calgary. Its winding pathways and smaller garden areas can also provide more privacy than some of the city’s busier parks.

Do I need permission to propose at the Botanical Gardens of Silver Springs?

It is always a good idea to check the garden’s current guidelines before planning your proposal, especially if you want to bring decorations, reserve an area, or arrange a professional setup. A simple proposal and photography session may have different requirements than a styled event.

When is the best time for proposal photographs at the gardens?

The best time depends on the season, available light, garden hours, and how busy the location is likely to be. Photographing closer to sunrise or later in the day can provide softer light and a quieter atmosphere. I can help you select a time that photographs beautifully while still fitting naturally into your plans.

How will we keep the proposal a surprise?

We will create a detailed plan before the proposal, including where to meet, where I will be positioned, and how I will know you have arrived. If your partner knows there will be a photography session, I can use a believable direction or setup to help you get into position. Every plan is tailored to what will feel natural for your relationship.

What happens after the proposal?

After your partner says yes, I will give you both time to take in the moment. We can then create relaxed engagement photographs around the gardens while the excitement is still fresh. This allows you to remember both the proposal itself and the joyful minutes that followed.

Can you help me plan a Calgary proposal?

Absolutely. You do not need to have the entire proposal planned before reaching out. I can help you consider locations, lighting, timing, privacy, positioning, and how to keep the plan hidden.
